KEEP YOUR MOKUMONO IN SHAPE

Anything that gets a little love will last longer. That goes for you, but also for your bike. There are a few simple things you can easily do yourself, separate from periodic service calls by a professional.

01. THE BANDS

Your bike's tires wear less quickly when they are properly inflated, and you also ride more comfortably with adequately inflated tires. It is good practice to check the pressure at least once a month or every 500 kilometers. We recommend 3 bar (or 45 psi) as a good balance between efficiency, comfort and puncture resistance. The specific minimum and maximum pressure can be found on the side of the tire.

The tires we use last a long time, but wear depends on the surface and the number of miles you ride. It is a good idea to check the tires regularly for pebbles or other sharp objects in the tire tread (and remove them) or cracks in the sidewalls. If the tire no longer has tread, it is time to replace it.

02. THE BRAKES

Your e-bike is equipped with disc brakes. Both the brake disc and pads wear out, but the disc lasts much longer than the pads. We recommend a quick check of the brake pads after 1,000 kilometers. The thickness of a brake pad should be at least 1.5 millimeters. If it is less then we recommend replacing the brake pads. If the pressure of the braking system drops, contact our workshop. Annual inspection of the brakes is good anyway, regardless of the number of miles driven.

If you suffer from squeaky brakes, clean the brake discs with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Do not use foaming brake disc cleaners and do not touch the discs or brake pads with bare hands, use disposable gloves instead.

03. THE GATES BELT

For a quiet and smooth ride, the belt tension must be correct. If the belt hangs too slack, it can skip over the teeth of the rear sprocket and damage the belt. Too much tension can damage the bearings in the rear hub. To check the tension, you can download Gates' free Bicycle Belt Tension Meter app. Then hold your phone next to the lower part of the belt and pluck at it until you get three readings. An average of 45-60Hz (or a 1cm up/down movement) is recommended.

04. THE BATTERY

All lithium batteries wear out with use. On average, a lithium battery deteriorates about 10 percent every year of use. This means the battery's range decreases over the life of your bike.

To keep the battery in the best possible condition, never charge the battery in temperatures below 0°C. And if you don't use the bike for a while, store the battery outside the bike and charge it once a month.

To maximize the battery range, it is best to inflate the tires to at least 3.0 bar and perform regular quick check- ups to see if the wheels are free-running.

05. CLEANING THE BICYCLE

Before cleaning the bike, remove the battery. Do not use a pressure washer and harsh solvents such as ethanol or acetone. Wash your bike with water and a mild detergent and use a soft brush or sponge. Clean the drive belt with water and a soft brush; there is no need to lubricate the belt! Clean the brake discs with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Do not use foaming cleaners for the brake discs and do not touch the discs or brake pads with bare hands; use disposable gloves instead.
